Workshops

The Bioinformatics Institute runs various workshops throughout the year. Here are some of the recent workshops we have delivered.

To express interest in new workshops on these or on other topics, please contact us.

Introduction to Genomics and Bioinformatics Workshop

Our Introduction to Genomics and Bioinformatics workshop is a high-level half-day seminar block, covering:

  • Sequencing platforms and terminology
  • Gene expression and transcriptomics
  • Genome assembly and annotation
  • Exploring public data sources
  • Genome Browsers
  • Pathway analysis
  • Accessing further help via the Bioinformatics Institute and NZGL

Following the course, there will be time set aside to ask us questions or discuss your research.

There is no charge for attendance.

No further sessions of this workshop are currently planned; to register your interest in upcoming sessions, please contact us.

Application Workshop: 16S Metabarcoding Analysis

In this one-day hands-on workshop, you will be working with a real life dataset from the Illumina MiSeq platform.

We will go through the steps involved in analysis of such a dataset, using popular software MOTHUR and QIIME. Analysis will involve chimera detection, distance calculation, OTU identification, taxonomy classification, alpha/beta diversity calculation and population level analyses.

There is a small charge ($50 + GST) for attendance. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided.

No further sessions of this workshop are currently planned; to register your interest in upcoming sessions, please contact us.

Application Workshop: De novo Genome Assembly

This one-day hands-on workshop will see you generating a new bacterial and eukaryotic genome.

You will go through the theory and process of assembling the genome, automatically predicting genes and other genomic features, and presenting it to end users. Some basic familiarity with Linux-based operating systems is required.

Some basic familiarity with Linux-based operating systems is required; more specifically, you are required to have a basic familiarity with using the command line (navigating the file system, moving / creating / deleting files, running commands). If you don't have any familiarity, you can still attend the workshop, but you will be required to complete some free online tutorials to bring you up to speed.

There is a small charge for attendance. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided.

No further sessions of this workshop are currently planned; to register your interest in upcoming sessions, please contact us.

Application Workshop: Transcriptomics Using Next-Generation Sequencing

Are you interested in using next-generation sequencing for differential gene expression and transcriptomics? Then this in-depth application workshop on the analysis of RNA-seq data will interest you.

This in-depth (2-day) application workshop on the analysis of RNA-seq data will include hands-on analysis of a real dataset, taking participants through a complete analysis pipeline from raw sequencing data to output graphics and spreadsheets. We hope the workshop will provide a good understanding of the tools and processes used, and enable you to analyse simple RNA-seq datasets yourself.

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided on both days.

No further sessions of this workshop are currently planned; to register your interest in upcoming sessions, please contact us.
